Young People’s Concert
As a part of its regular concert season, the Dover Symphony Orchestra presents a Young People’s Concert in November each year. This concert features music geared to the education and enjoyment of children under the age of 12. In fact, children under 12 are admitted free to this concert, accompanied by a ticketed adult. This concert is the DSO’s effort to encourage school aged children to become audience members in performances of classical music. This year’s program will feature “Peter and the Wolf” by Sergei Prokofiev, which is a narrated story set to music. The performance will be preceded by a short talk/demonstration by Mrs. Betty Hamilton (Past President of the DSO). Mrs. Hamilton will introduce the family of orchestral instruments, as well as give examples of the musical themes. The concert will be followed by an “Instrument Zoo,” in which members of the Dover Symphony will demonstrate each instrument family used in the orchestra.
This year, and for the past three years the Young People’s Concert has been preceded by a performance of a preparatory orchestra called “Little Strings,” a string orchestra conducted by Laura Rogers. This ensemble consists of 25 students of primary and middle school age who are committed to study and performance of music. For more information visit Little Strings.
Old Dover Days
Each year the Dover Symphony Orchestra has participated in the annual celebration of Old Dover Days with a Pops concert the first weekend in May. On Saturday of this weekend, stop by the DSO booth manned by orchestra volunteers — pick up a season brochure and learn about the Pops concert to follow the next day. The 2009 Pops Concert will celebrate Cinco de Mayo with selections from Evita, Ravel’s Bolero, Bizet’s Carmen Suite, and others.
